“We have to take a stand in this world. If we let the negative forces disquiet us too much, we will abandon our own belief. Those of us who believe have to get out there and campaign. Our lives have to become the campaign.” Ruby Dee from the book With Ossie & Ruby In This Life Together the chapter Love, Marriage and Struggle
Hey Family,
It has been six months since I launched this blog, I let imposter syndrome beat me into a corner. I picked my life apart and somewhere believed the untruth that I didn’t know what to say or if anyone would listen. I was busy with productive procrastination, you know the kind where you feel justified not working on that thing you should be doing in lieu of getting yourself together to do what you are supposed to be doing. I know I’m not the only one, I heard someone put it like this you working on good but is it God? It was fear y’all straight up period point plank conversation is over ok!
I awake this morning thinking about the new years eve message that resonated with my soul, I have a chance, I matter will I build or bury? I went to my office and begin thinking about the ancestors, I get my Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee book off the shelf. This book has so much deliciousness in it, I thumb through and land on Ruby’s statement one of the many I have highlighted in this book. I read her words and begin thinking where do I start? The blog crosses my mind. You said you would blog at least once a month and that was six months ago I thought to myself! I read her words again. I begin thinking Kamili what is it that you believe? What are you seeing in the field that you work in every day? I begin by answering I believe families are the most important thing God created. He created the family before he created the church. I begin thinking about the field of work that I am in, the hurting families and individuals that show up that are connected to families their pain, suffering, and mental health issues. I thought about my own family all the triumphs and many of the tragedies. I begin thinking about how I came to choose this field of work. It was after experiencing a devasting blow that the question then was how did we get here?
Once I find the answers, Lord God I promise I will get a return on my seed that was buried. I would help other families not to make the same mistakes, especially families that looked like mine. How would I help them would be the next question and this morning Ruby Dee guided me back to the answer I’ve known all along, my life will be the campaign. What do I know from my lived experiences and the education that I have received? How can I pass it on to families and or individuals? So here I am family taking all my raggedy, all of my inadequacies, all of my fears, the insight, knowledge, and wisdom of my life and stepping into my life’s campaign: Marriage, Family, and Therapy.
